Business Ethics

There is much talk today about ethics in business - as there should be, but there should be more than talk; there should be a high moral code for all executives who are responsible to both their customers and their shareholders.

I have been the president and CEO of one publicly owned company and also was president of another that was responsible to customers who traded equities. This carries a high responsibility to all concerned. You have to be more than worried if you do something wrong because you will go to jail. You must have the desire to try to always do your best for everyone who works for you as well as all the customers or investors that deal with your company.

Ethics is supposed to be either black or white, right or wrong, but today it is many shades of grey. If any company does shady business you can be sure it starts at the top and filters down because the president is the one who sets the example for the actions of the entire company. This is as true for actions of our elected officials as it is for corporations or individuals. We have had some pretty sorry examples of that in Washington.

Each time there is a new scandal the public seems less disturbed. The recent disclosure that mutual funds have been allowing hedge funds and other large traders to take positions after the closing bell is a brutal example. Maybe investors are not aware that someone is writing checks on their account. This is stolen money that is no different than a guy with a gun holding up a 7-11 store. Yes, the one difference is that the mutual funds have allowed millions of dollars to be siphoned off from those to whom they owed a fiduciary relationship. The fund manager is a crook and deserves jail time. He just took the money with a click of the computer keyboard and that was his weapon. White collar crime deserves the same punishment as the guy with a gun.

When you give a brokerage company, a mutual fund or any financial institution your money you expect, in fact, you demand, that they treat you fairly within the rules of the industry. When you are short-changed you should not accept it.

Because of the huge amounts of money available and accessible to people in the financial industry it is easy to understand how they can be tempted into criminal actions. That is why all publicly traded companies are required to have their books audited annually. Lately we have seen that even these audits are tainted.

Investors rely upon the numbers set before them in order to make decisions about owning stock in a company. If the information is dishonest a proper decision cannot be made.

Today we are seeing another type of corporate officer being created. He is called the Governance Officer. It is his job to see that the company maintains high ethical standards. I applaud this action and hope he cannot be seduced by big bucks.

Al Thomas' book, "If It Doesn't Go Up, Don't Buy It!" has helped thousands of people make money and keep their profits with his simple 2-step method. Read the first chapter at http://www.mutualfundmagic.com and discover why he's the man that Wall Street does not want you to know.

Lower High Cholesterol

Recently, The New York Times published an article entitled U.S. calls for major cholesterol reductions. The same article was printed in numerous papers around the country. But what if you could lower high cholesterol with just a few changes to your diet and a little exercise.

Sounds like a great way to fight heart disease, right? So lets look at what it takes to lower high cholesterol. Because you already understand what occurs when we artificially lower cholesterol levels without any strategies we wont spend our time viewing these.

Framingham Heart study followed people for around 5 decades which proved that LDL is one of the many factors of heart disease. In fact it showed that LDL is actually only a small factor in heart disease. Christie Ballantyne, M.D., a cardiologist from the Baylor College of Medicine said that The majority of people who end up having heart attacks or stroke dont have high cholesterol.

Malcolm Kendrick, M.D. who talks about the Framingham Study results as published in the Journal of the American Medical Association said here is a direct association between falling cholesterol levels over the first 14 years and mortality over the following 18 years. Mortality goes up.

Heres something that just might scare you. Scientific studies have proven that as individuals lower their LDL cholesterol level, their chances for stroke go up.

Using cholesterol lowering drugs like Lipitor artificially lower cholesterol levels, but it also increases the death rate from stroke. These statin drugs are known to be toxic to the body, you will also face liver and kidney failure.

Your body not only produces cholesterol, it also needs cholesterol for a variety of functions. In fact cholesterol is essential to every cell membrane. It provides the starting point and building block for the steroid hormones in our bodies which includes the hormones testosterone and estrogen.

So you see not all cholesterol is bad. What is bad is the oxidation of cholesterol which is one of the factors of developing heart disease.

Oxidation enables the cholesterol to become sticky and then it begins to form plaque in the walls of the arteries.

The way to keep oxidation from damaging your cholesterol is to zap them with antioxidants! You can eat plenty of food and supplements which are rich in anti-oxidants. Choose anti-oxidants like CoenzymeQ10, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Alpha-lipoic acid or ALA which is naturally produced by your body but, as you age the amount goes down significantly.

There are many affordable food sources so you can easily get the omega 3's and the right fats to keep your cholesterol levels in balance. You should also eat lots of Garlic, Ginger, Olive oil, Olives, Almonds, Walnuts, Flaxseed, Eggplant, Okra, Organic Eggs, and Fresh fruit all of which are easy to purchase, affordable, and a great way to prevent cholesterol from becoming a problem.

And if you really need to lower high cholesterol, the organic plant alcohol from sugar cane, Policosanol, is one of the most powerful ways to reduce bad cholesterol levels.

You can also spend time raising your HDL cholesterol levels which will improve your ratio between good and bad. Some of the best ways to improve your Good or HDL cholesterol is with exercise as well as Vitamin D, and Niacin.

When you lower high cholesterol you increase your heart health. So what are you waiting for?

Secrets of Dog Training Professionals - Operant Conditioning

Have you ever wondered how really good dog trainers come up with the techniques they use to solve behaviour problems in dogs such as excessive barking, destructive chewing, toileting in the house and jumping up on visitors? Or how top dog trainers come up with ways to train dogs in top obedience and working competitions? Apart from a few naturals, most really good dog trainers have a very good understanding of how dogs learn. They have adapted theory from the world of behavioural science and turned that knowledge into real-life practical skills for training dogs. This article explains in plain English some of the science and theory behind dog training, these really are secrets of the dog training professionals!

Operant Conditioning is the term that scientists use to describe what dog trainers call training with consequences. That is, any training that involves a consequence that either reinforces or punishes behavior. There are 4 possible consequence types used in Operant Conditioning, and 1 non-consequence. These are:

1.Positive Reinforcement: when we give a reward and the behaviour increases or is maintained as a result, we call this positive reinforcement (+R). e.g dog sits when asked, we give a treat. Dog learns to sit when asked in future.

2.Negative Reinforcement: when we take something unpleasant away and the behaviour increases or is maintained as a result, we call this negative reinforcement (-R). e.g we ask dog to sit, pulling up on collar, dog sits, we release pressure from the collar. Dog learns to sit when asked in future.

3.Positive Punishment: when we do something unpleasant and the behaviour is decreased or eliminated as a result, we call this positive punishment (+P). e.g dog goes to investigate kitchen bench for food, we make a sharp noise. Dog learns not to investigate kitchen benches for food in future.

4.Negative Punishment: when we take away something the dog wants or enjoys and the behaviour is decreased or eliminated as a result, we call this negative punishment (-P). e.g dog plays too roughly with another more timid dog, we leash rough dog and remove the opportunity to play. Dog learns not to play too roughly in future.

5.Extinction: when behaviour is no longer reinforced and it eventually goes away, we call this extinction. e.g dog is used to being allowed outside when he whines at the door, but is suddenly no longer allowed out when he whines. Dog learns not to whine at the door. Extinction sometimes makes the target behaviour worse before it gets better, sometimes significantly. This is known as an extinction burst and is usually a sign that the behaviour is about to diminish rapidly. In the current example, the dog might whine more often, more loudly, and for longer periods before learning that whining doesnt work for him any more.

Lets examine the terms more closely. Apart from extinction, you will notice four words that can be used in four different combinations. These are positive, negative, reinforcement and punishment and they are technical terms that scientists use when discussing Operant Conditioning.

Positive means to add something. We add the reward, or add the punisher. By contrast, Negative means to take something away. We take away the reward, or take away the unpleasant stimulus.

Reinforcement is when we increase or maintain behaviour. The behaviour happens more often, more intensely, for longer periods, or it continues to happen without reducing in frequency, intensity or duration. By contrast, Punishment is when we decrease or eliminate behaviour using consequence. We reduce the frequency, intensity or duration of the behaviour.

A common mistake is to assume that we have reinforced or punished behaviour when in fact in future we discover that the behaviour has not actually been changed! Many dog trainers believe that praise is an effective reinforcer. It may be, for some dogs in some circumstances. The truth is we dont know unless we see the behaviour that earned the praise increase or keep occurring in the future. The same applies to punishment. Yelling at a dog might stop it from going through your rubbish bin while you are there, but does it stop your dog going through the rubbish bin while youre not there? Probably not. A more effective approach is to use a more secure rubbish bin, or put the rubbish bin in a place which is inaccessible to the dog.

Eight Ways To Save Money On Gas

Knowing ways to save money on gas can make a big difference in your monthly fuel bill, whether you are embarking on a long journey or just making a daily commute.

Top Tips for Gas Savings

Here are eight quick tips for saving money at the pump.

1. How fuel efficient is your car? Do some research to determine if you could save money in the long term by switching to a model that gets more miles to the gallon. It may also be possible for you to make your current vehicle more fuel efficient, and you may even be able to get tax credits for doing so. Talk to your accountant to find out more about your options.

2. Can you share a car? If you want to save money on gas without changing your car or your buying habits, see if you can give somebody else a ride to work in the mornings and split the cost. Talk to friends and colleagues to gauge interest in such an arrangement, or do a google search for car pools in your area.

3. Consider public transportation. So many opportunities exist for convenient public transportation. You may be able to get some work done en route, too (or, at the very least, some peace and quiet before and after your work day.)

4. Shop around for the best fuel prices. You might be surprised how much the price of gas can vary from pump to pump. A simple Internet search can help you locate the cheapest local options before you even leave your house.

5. Look after your tires. High resistance tires and under inflated tires make your driving less efficient. Also, make sure your air filter is clean. Driving with it dirty can reduce your fuel efficiency, too.

6. Be a loyal customer. Some gas stations will give you a loyalty discount if you buy from them regularly or join a loyalty club. Some credit cards will also give points or cash back for gas purchases.

7. Choose the right grade. Before you pay more, find out if your car's engine was designed for premium gasoline. Experts say that the less expensive grades are fine for many vehicles. Consult your owner's manual to see if your car needs the more expensive grade. If your owner's manual doesn't mention the recommended grade of gasoline, consult your mechanic or car dealer.

8. Watch your driving. When you accelerate suddenly, you burn more fuel than you would if you were driving at a consistent and comparatively low speed. Also, avoid idling as well as driving around looking for a closer parking spot when a short walk could get you where you want to go.

With the price of fuel on the rise and concerns about global warming leading to increased pressure on government to tax motorists, it has never been more important to know how to save money on gas.

In the long run, all you need to do is reassess your driving habits and take good care of your car, which is a wise move regardless of the price at the pump.

Some Automotive Sound System Ideas For The Budget Minded Consumer

Despite popular belief it is possible to get a premium sound system with a budget. I completely understand what being on a budget can mean. I can tell you that you can get a quality sound system for under $300.

There are many things you can do to lower the price of the sound system you are wanting. First of all the competition in this area is quite big. As a result of that you will see that prices at every store will tend to be the same or a little higher so your best bet may be to look online. Look around online because thats the only place youre going to find the cheap system of your dreams.

Once you have found the cheapest online price, get on the phone with local stores. Many local stores feel the need to compete with online prices. As a result of your findings many stores will lower the price throwing in freebies and upping the installation fee. Once you have received a few upgrades, continue making calls and watch them compete for your business. Take into account the value of the freebies and upgrades to you. If you really have no use for the things they offer you then take the better offer on better speakers and what not. Be sure to agree with the upgrades they are giving you. Also consider the value of the upgrades they have given you and match the bargain with others.

Another truth when it comes to buying a sound system you do not have to buy the best one there is in order to get quality sound and music you can spend much less on a product just as good and get the same results. Spend your money where you think it matters the most. Sometimes you are paying for nothing more than the name on the product most others are better. I'm a big fan of Bose. I love the sound and have yet to discover a better product at lower cost. That does not mean that I wouldnt get a different brand if the other brand was cheaper and produced more power and better sound. In fact, I have held on to my car just so I could have my sound system. A Bose sound system is not a budget grabber but it is good quality, but you can find deals for cheap that offer the same thing so dont buy the name brand just cause its cool buy the brand that has better quality and price.

In reality, there are many discount deals you can find online and off that offer premium sound and music. You can keep looking for the cheapest or go with the best but its good to keep looking for what you really want because something else expensive may have caught your attention and you could have waited and had the cheaper better version of what you wanted.

What is a Life Insurance Policy Loan?

Permanent Life Insurance Policies will accumulate a cash value and this money can be borrowed to meet emergency needs. This can be a real benefit of Life Insurance or it can have serious consequences.

The primary purpose of Life Insurance is to provide financial security to your dependents in the event of your death. In recent years, Life Insurance has developed several secondary purposes such as savings, investment, and tax deferment vehicles. Permanent Life Insurance Policies gain a cash value as time goes on and loans can be made against this cash value. The cash value in the policy is not actually what is given to you when you borrow against it. It still remains in your account and your Life Insurance remains in force.

The cash value actually acts as security against the loan. This seems like a good thing. You get the money and your coverage remains intact. In many cases the repayment provisions are very liberal. It is really the interest on the loan that must be repaid annually. The repayment of the loan itself can often be put off until a later date and then repaid in a manner that does not strain your financial resources unduly. All in all, it seems like a pretty good deal.

It is a good deal, but there are some pitfalls. In most cases, the full loan will be deducted from your death benefit should you happen to die before the loan is repaid. This may result in your beneficiaries receiving much less than you planned on them getting and maybe less than their actual needs. Also, should you be unable to pay the annual interest, it is added to the loan balance. This increases the interest during the next period and further reduces the death benefit.

Some policies are structured so that earnings are used to pay premiums. It is possible that the loan and interest might so reduce earnings that they will be insufficient to cover the premiums. This will mean that you will have to pay them out of pocket at a time when you are trying to avoid extra expenses. If for any reason, you should be unable to repay the loan resulting in a lapse of your policy, you not only lose your coverage, but are subject to taxation on any deferred income.

These pitfalls do not necessarily mean that Life Insurance Policy loans are a bad idea. They can serve a valuable purpose during times when extra capital is needed such as paying for college tuition or funding a retirement account. The secret is to make sure you understand the consequences of the loan and all of the provisions. Your Insurance Agent can provide a Policy Illustration that will detail the impact of the loan on your death benefit.

How Do You Set Consulting Fees?

One of the most frequent questions I receive from those who are trying to start or grow their own consulting business is: "How and what do you charge clients for your consulting services?"

The ways of billing clients are numerous. There are hourly rates, by-the-job fixed rates, contingency or performance arrangements, flat fee plus expenses, daily fee plus expenses, and many other methods of charging for your consulting services. Which one is best?

Let us consider some ways of billing for your time.

1. Hourly or Daily Rate

Many consultants charge by the hour or day. To establish an hourly or daily rate, they try to calculate the number of billable hours in a year. Many hours will be spent marketing and in administrative and other functions, so this time is not chargeable to the client. As well, vacation time, holidays, sick days, and so on, can not be directly billed to the client.

Consultants, like other businesses, must charge enough to cover their overhead expenses and also earn a profit. If a consultant wants to earn twenty-five dollars per hour of working time, he (or she) might have to charge one hundred dollars per hour to the client. This assumes one half billable hours and fifty percent overhead and profit.

Your hourly or daily rate may be limited by what your competition charges, especially if you have not positioned yourself as different from them.

2. Fixed or Flat Rate

Some consultants charge by the job or a flat rate. For example, a tax consultant might charge three hundred dollars to prepare a tax return for you and your spouse, including an unaudited income statement for your business from information supplied by you. If the consultant takes only one hour to do this, he grosses three hundred dollars per hour. If, though, the tax consultant miscalculates the time required, he could take twenty hours to complete the job and make only fifteen dollars per hour.

Of course, consultants can also make a profit on the labour of their employees or subcontractors.

Many consultants claim to make more on a flat rate than on a hourly basis. Advantages include being able to give a quote to the client up front and less disputes on price (as the total bill was agreed upon in advance).

To protect yourself on flat rate assignments, always limit the scope of your engagement to something that you can calculate easily.

For example, if you are asked to give a quote for setting up a website for a business, you might break this project into smaller assignments.

First, you could give a quote for preliminary research and recommendations. Estimate the time required to meet with the client, learn about his business and goals, develop strategies and a budget, and prepare recommendations on how to proceed. Then, give the client a quote (perhaps in the form of a one page letter agreement or proposal). Upon acceptance of the offer by the client in writing, you may proceed with this phase of the project.

Some consultants collect one-half of their fee up front and half upon assignment completion for each phase of the consulting project.

If the client doesn`t like your recommendations, at least you get paid for the work you did. Perhaps you can charge him to prepare alternative suggestions.

If your website project was not broken into smaller steps or assignments, you could find that you spent way more time on the project than anticipated.

Also, you might not find out until you present your bill for the whole project that your client won`t pay, either because he is not satisfied with the results or because he is unable or unwilling to pay.

Breaking down a project into smaller assignments helps you estimate more accurately and limits your financial exposure.

3. Contingency or Performance Arrangements

Sometimes clients will ask you to become their partner. If you do, you are no longer an objective consultant.

What if your client asks you to do management consulting for twenty-five percent of the net profits? Will there even be any profit by the time he writes off his car, home office, entertainment, travel, wages to self and family members, and other expenses?

On the other hand, if you are a marketing consultant that is absolutely certain that you can increase a client`s sales, you may feel confident charging a fee based on the increased sales volume of the client. Are you sure your client will co-operate with you in the attaining of this goal?

Some consultants charge a flat rate plus a percentage of ownership or profits for their services.

Fees based on contingency or performance arrangements are risky. Most consultants are better off charging a fair price for their services and leaving the risk of the client`s business to the client.

4. Value Based Fees

Sometimes consultants can justify fees based on their value to the client. For example, if you save a client one million dollars in taxes, your fee may be higher than normal to reflect the value of the services rendered.

You might pay an accountant or lawyer a fee of fifteen hundred dollars based on time for certain tax related services. What would you be willing to pay to legally save an extra million dollars in taxes? Ten thousand dollars, one hundred thousand dollars, or more?

Can you apply this information to your own consulting practice? Is there some particularly valuable service that you can render that would justify premium rates?

However and whatever you charge, be sure that your fee is a good value for your client and also compensates you fairly.

The Many Advantages Of An Internet Business

Working at home on your internet business is very gratifying. You are now the captain of your ship. You are the one who is steering the wheel. You can use your full creative capacity to bring your business to be a "mega success".

The advantages of an internet business is that you don't need a physical location. You don't need to rent or buy a place to start your business. Imagine how much it will cost you to do such thing. It can cost you thousand of dollards per month to have such business.

On the internet you need a location. But it is a domain name, like you know. It can cost between $5 to $25 per year to have an internet domain name. At $25 you can even have free web hosting. So it is really cheap to do business on the internet.

Of course you need a website. You can create one if you have some web development knowledge. Or you can have one free with an affiliate program or other home business opportunity. Or you can have website template for a low investment and some are even free.

On the internet you can advertise for free. This is another benefit of the internet. You can write article like this one and publish it in ezine, website, etc. This is call viral marketing. Or you can advertise for a really low investment, like with overture or Google Adword. You pay only when someone click on your Ad. This is called Pay Per Click. You can have good traffic and good sales using PPC campaign. You can bid as low as 10 cents per click.

With an internet business you don't need no inventory unless you have youre own product that you ship by yourself. Most business opportunity ship the product for you and you keep the profits.

Best South Beach Diet Plans

In dieting, there is no such thing as perfection. No one is going to always eat the right thing. There will be times when allow yourself an indulgence or two. Actually, not being perfect is part of the South Beach Diet. Its expected that there are times when you will fall off the wagon. But, there are ways to make the best out of the South Beach Diet plan. Here are some tips or hints that will make following the plan second nature:

1.Eat till satisfied (but not stuffed) There is a reason why youre not expected to weigh and measure everything you eat. First, its cumbersome, especially in social situations such as restaurants or at a friends house. Second, you should be satisfied. So, you should eat until your hunger is satisfied but not stuffed.

2.Use the right carbs for satisfaction This is especially true during Phase 1. By using the lowest glycemic index carbs, you prevent carb cravings while regulating your blood sugar.

3.Take advantage of snacks The plan is designed to allow you two snacks a day. The reason is simple not eating for long periods of time leads to dips in your blood sugar which causes carb cravings. Having small snacks between meals keeps your blood sugar level. So, pack snacks and enjoy.

4.Remember to include sugar stoppers Although fiber is great in getting in the way of carbs, it is not the only thing that does the trick. Fats and proteins slow the speed with which your body absorbs carbs. For example, a little olive oil or cheese with your bread is actually better than having it plain. So, if you are going to eat something with a lot of carbs, make to sure to pair it with protein or fat.

5.Plan for dessert Yes, you heard that right. Between dinner and bedtime is a dangerous time for people on a diet. All of your good intentions are challenged. It could be your routine to have something or you need something sweet after a savory dinner. So, leave a little room for dessert.

6.Jump back on Everyone falls off the wagon. It may be the holiday season, a stressful week at work or a special occasion. Its ok to indulge once in a while. Just remember, jump back on the wagon. If you have gained weight, go on Phase 1 and then 2 until you have lost it.

These simple strategies can help you make the best of the South Beach Diet plan without having to be perfect. Remember this diet is supposed to work with your life.
